The Long Journey of the Moth

You may remember the curious moth from the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It shows up both to notify Gandalf of the coming of the eagles and to let him summon the eagles when in need. This moth has no foundation in the books and are widely believed to be a substitute for and tribute to the character Radagast. Radagast does appear in the newly released Hobbit film but his relationship to the moth has yet to be explained. The graph below shows the amazing distance traveled by the moth in order to help Gandalf out.

Let us now pay tribute to the moth for it is the unsung hero of Middle-Earth!

Note that this post is more about making people realize the huge sacrifice of the moth rather than being educational.
