Smaug and Beorn in the new trailer for the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

It was only a few minutes ago we were all treated to a new trailer for Peter Jackson’s the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Fans have been anticipating this new trailer for weeks, wondering if it would show Beorn and what it would reveal about Smaug. It turns out we got to both see and hear a great deal of Smaug. Beorn was shown in bear form. Thranduil warned Tauriel not to encourage Legolas’ feelings. This has potential of being a highly controversial trailer.

But first of all. Here is the trailer.

And here are a few images of moments in the trailer in order of appearance. Please leave your comments and thoughts about the trailer at the bottom.

hobbit1

The trailer begins with a wide shot of Bilbo Baggins walking over the immense treasure of Smaug. It looks almost ridiculously big.

hobbit2

“The tales and songs fall utterly short of your enormity oh Smaug the stupendous” – Bilbo Baggins

In a second shot, Bilbo is heard talking to Smaug. He flatters him and calls him “stupendous” which essentially means highly impressive. Quite nice, but why is he not invisible?

hobbit3

“We are the Dwarves of Erebor. We have come to reclaim our homeland!” – Thorin

We can see how the Dwarves, captured by the Elves of Mirkwood, are led into the underground Halls of Thranduil. The voice over of Thorin exclaiming that they have come to reclaim Erebor is likely from another scene where they meet the people of Lake-town. Thorin isn’t especially keen on telling Thranduil anything about their quest in the book and I sure hope they keep it that way.

hobbit29

Thranduil offers the Dwarves his help (unless this is from a completely different scene). For some reason he talks with his eyes closed which makes him look a bit odd.

hobbit5

A shot most likely showing the Dwarves traveling through the destroyed city of Dale by boat on their way to the mountain.

hobbit6

“Legolas has grown very fond of you. Do not give him hope where there is none.” – Thranduil

Tauriel and Thranduil have a “talk” on what appears to be like feelings between Tauriel and Legolas. This is something I have a bit of trouble with.

hobbit7

Thorin Oakenshield looks out over the destroyed city of Dale.

hobbit8

Bilbo is seen fighting spiders in Mirkwood. After this we will likely see him name his sword Sting in the movie.

hobbit9

“We have been blind and in our blindness our Enemy has returned.” – Gandalf

Here is a rather odd scene of Gandalf. It could be either Dol Guldur or the tomb of the Nazgûl. My guess is Dol Guldur and that this is the scene where Gandalf reveals the true identity of the Necromancer.

hobbit10

We’re shown a brief shot of an army of Orcs. It could be a scene from the attack on Dol Guldur.

hobbit11

We’re sent back to a scene with Gandalf in what is likely Dol Guldur. He proceeds through the opening and…

hobbit12

… BAM. We’re shown the Eye of Sauron for a split second.

hobbit13

This is followed by a look up towards the treetops of Mirkwood.

hobbit14

Here is a rather interesting shot of Bilbo picking up the One Ring in Mirkwood. It appears as if he had lost it and was anxious to find it again.

hobbit15

“I found something in the Goblin-town.” – Bilbo
“What did you fin?” – Gandalf
“My courage.” – Bilbo
“Good! You’ll need it.” – Gandalf

Bilbo almost reveals that he found the magic ring but changes his mind at the last moment and tells Gandalf that what he found was his courage.

hobbit16

We’re shown another scene of Bilbo attacked by the spiders of Mirkwood.

hobbit17

Here is perhaps one of the most anticipated parts of the trailer. Beorn. It must be him, right? This is the one part of the trailer that I am particularly pleased with.

hobbit18

The company is shown running towards something. I can’t think of what it could be. Anyone?

hobbit19

One of the Dwarves is seen jumping into one of the barrels upon their escape from the Halls of Thranduil. This could mean a rather big deviation from the book where they hide in the barrels and are pushed into the water by unknowing Elves.

hobbit20

Smaug is obviously rather upset about the presence of the Dwarves at Erebor.

hobbit21

Bard is seen with his bow in a brief shot.

hobbit22

We get to see Elves in armor.

hobbit23

Thorin is “blown away” by Smaug. Reason unknown.

hobbit24

Thorin stops Bilbo somewhere inside Erebor and exclaims that he “will not risk this quest for the life of one burglar”. Balin defends Bilbo. This I quite like. It is hopefully to show the relationship between Balin and Bilbo which is present in the book.

hobbit25

And now, in the final few shots of the trailer, we get to see Smaug and hear him talk to Bilbo.

hobbit26

“Thief. Where are you. Come now, don’t be shy. Step into the light.” – Smaug

I have to say Benedict Cumberbatch did a great job with the voice.

hobbit27

A full body glimpse of Smaug.

hobbit28

Smaug’s teeth is shown as he breaths fire at the very end of the trailer.

All in all, this was a trailer that left me a little excited and a little worried.
